Firstly, this book is short. It is at most 60 pages and the writing is clear and concise. It does, however, only provide the perspective of a chief maintenance person within Pan Am and only views the development and production from the standpoint of that one company.While I have no doubt that Pan Am was heavily involved with the early design and production issues, I have to believe other airlines were expressing interest in the plane. I cannot believe Boeing would have bet the entire companies fortune on one plane for one airline. I know that I flew in an American 747 from Boston to Los Angeles at about the time this writer claims Pan Am was just getting the problems corrected.An interesting look at the plane from one perspective, but I have to believe other, better books exist. I would look for them first!
Great read about multiple problems surrounding the introduction of the "magnificent" B747 aircraft into commercial airline service, commencing in January, 1970. The author, Ron Marasco was indeed the "Pan Am" point man from the start that headed and directed the selected Pan Am team of maintenance technicians chosen to aid the introduction of the B747 into Pan Am passenger service. But......this story reaches out much further then the small band of these Pan Am folk. This is a story about technical problems overcome by scores of dedicated people, men & women from the Boeing Aircraft Company, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines, Pan American World Airways and all the initial B747 aircraft operators across the world!!!! Thanks to the airmen, the maintenance crews, the engineering folks, the production line personnel at Boeing & P&W that worked so hard to deliver to the world traveling public, the safest aircraft ever built, "The Queen of the Skies"...the B747. This is truly a "human" story worth telling to all in the aviation community, and beyond, as to what teamwork, hard work, dedication, brotherhood, capable leadership can do when focused and motivated to completing the mission!!! It is interesting about all the ideas, headaches, problems everyone experiences when creating a new air plane. This book answered a lot of questions. I enjoyed the writing of the author and his explanations.
I know the author and lived through the B747 service start, however much of the "teething problems were not mentioned". The main story was about the Boeing engineer who designed the aircraft, but nothing about all the PAA Maintenance/Avionics/PAA Engineering people who made the first flight work and what we did to "keep it flying".
This brief essay contains very little that's not covered by Joe Sutter in his book, 747 (which is heavily quoted in this book). Skip this book and instead read two excellent works: 747 by Joe Sutter, and Widebody by Clive Irving. Both are outstanding.
Most interesting awesome especially since the airlines went from the 220 seat 707 to the giant 464 seat 747.The 747 was the first commercial airplane that went into service without first going through military air force experiences to take some of the bugs out. Much of the 747 problems were that caused by various engine difficulties that took time and expense to correct and caused multiple engine failures on a few flights. It appears to me the writer was lenient in reporting operational problems and high costs associated. More should have been written as to the stress and operational situations crews had to operate under. Don't like that a computer replaced the Flight Engineer.
UNEMBELISHED, FACTUAL STORY OF BOEING'S MODEL 747-100 AND ITS JT9D-3A PAINFUL AND COSTLY INTRODUCTION INTO REVENUE SERVICE, BOTH FROM A FLIGHT OPERATIONS AND M&E PERSPECTIVES.IT WOULD HAVE BEEN GROUNDED TODAY AND RETURNED FOR REFUNDS !PAN AMERICAN AND HER PEOPLE TIRELESSLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE QUEEN OF THE SKIES AND HER ENGINES OPERATIONAL "GET WELL" .
