I don't know why the Skulduggery books haven't succeeded in crossing over to the U.S., given their great popularity in the United Kingdom. They aren't particularly British, (except for the dry humor and understated violence), and are perfectly accessible to an American reader. But, be that as it may, you'll just have to be content to be way ahead of your fellow readers on the cool scale, assuming you can find copies of these books. This volume three continues the development of the characters, advances the series' story arc, brings back some favorite secondary actors, and maintains the pace and deadpan humor of its predecessors. If you liked the first two volumes, (and you should probably try to read these in order), you should be happy with this installment.

This book is from my 10-year old...I think think this book is very fun, adventurous and funny. Who doesn't like a book about a skeleton who is a detective and a good guy? There are interesting character types that I haven't seem before in other books. I think the ending of the story leaves you wanting more. Read this book!

A great sequel for two great books. It was humorous and cheeky. A twist on a fairy tale and a detective story. When I picked out the first book on a school trip to the library, my teachers advised me not to read it, saying it was too scary. I denied their advice. It turned out to be the one of best story's I had ever read. You couldn't guess how happy when I got my kindle fire and found out they were on here! This book was a suspenseful page turner. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys books like Harry Potter.

The Skulduggery Pleasant series is for older kids, probably most exciting for the 10-12 age range. But I'm a mom, and I read this before passing it on to my son. (He was working on another book.) One thing I like about this series, which I like about the Harry Potter books, too, is that genuinely bad things happen to people. Though. since the world of magic and monsters isn't real, the young reader is removed from the violence being "real".But the battle between good and evil is desperate and the bad guys are really bad and there's plenty of people who sit in the middle unintentionally making trouble (Think Fudge in Harry Potter) or whose side is really up for grabs (Think Snape). There's also a lot of humor in the Skulduggery series.The Skulduggery books, at least through this 3rd book, do not have the touches of philosophy that you see in Harry Potter, though. If Derek Landy added a little more of the big questions to his stories, a little more of the morality tales, I think this series could turn into really exceptional books. Right now, they are, on balance, more simple fun.But sometimes the writing is downright excellent. Near the end of "The Faceless Ones", Landy describes a Faceless One as it enters our world. His description is amazing, I could see this creature in all it's awful beauty. More writing like that, and he'll have a classic. He's not there, yet, though.Recommended as fun reading.Happy Reader

Read it. Now. You won't regret it. Magic. Skeletons. Bad ass female characters. What else could you hope for in a book series?

Action packed and very descriptive so one never wonders, "Wait, what happened?" Funny dialog and excellent story line continuation.

I picked up the final book a year after reading the first two. I was not disappointed at all! this book is a quick read, but PACKED with a roller coaster of action, storyline and suspense. One of my favorite things about this author is that he includes dialogue that is completely relatable. No, I may not have magical powers or have a skeleton mentor, but I know the feeling of excitement, fear, embarrassment... Approachable and appropriate for the age group it targets. LOVED the series
